Article description
Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and wash when published. The detailed and decorative map by famous Dutch cartographer Gerard Valk shows Switzerland with its XIII cantons and the neighboring Rhaetia. The image of the map is reaching from the river Rhine and the Bodensee in the north towards 'Lake Geneva', the 'Lago Maggiore' and 'Lago di Como' in the south. Engraved with many place names of cities and villages, mountains, rivers, etc. Ornated in the upper left corner with a decorative title cartouche ornated with angels and a mileage scale in the upper right corner. The map is in original outline color from the period. It has the typical oxidation in the colors, as it is often seen on maps by Schenck & Valk. The map was carefully reinforced with thin Japan rice paper to protect the paper against the color oxidation. Recently viewed products
