Article description
Copper engraving, original color in wash and outline. Engraved and published by Petrus Schenk I (1661-1711). This rare antique map shows the Polisch-Lithuanian Empire and its neighbouring countries. This is Petrus (Pieter) Schenk's third map of the Polish-Lithuanian Empire, which appeared as a single sheet and was included in numerous Dutch collective atlases from the early 18th century. The most important model for them was de Wit's map. Petrus Schenk I., Map of the Polish-Lithuanian Empire, 1704, third status 1711. The letters of the title have been re-designed, the date changed to 1711. The title decoration has been re-engraved, but in a similar shape to the earlier version. The allegorical figures next to the small map in the upper right corner have also been re-engraved. A map network has been drawn in, the parallels are numbered one degree apart, the meridians two degrees apart. This third verion of this antique map of the Polish-Lithuanian Empire also shows some changes in content, e.g. numerous cities west of the Oder, outside the borders of Poland, have been added.P.
