Article description
Original copper engraving, finely hand colored, published from 1594 onwards in the town books 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg. The entire series of the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' comprised six volumes and was published and printed from 1572 towards 1619. Decorative panoramic city view of Regensburg in Bavaria situated on the river Danube. This highly decorative view is showing the city of Regensburg with the river Danube. The city view is seen from the north, across Stadtamhof, the stone bridge and the river Danube towards the old city walls. This highly decorative antique city view by Braun and Hogenberg is engraved after a sketch by Jakob Hoefnagel in 1594. J. Huefnagel was one of the most prominent and best artists in the second half of the sixteenth century, who provided mainly to the publishing house of G. Braun and Franz Hogenberg great sketches of German, European and foreign city views. Many of them are highly decorative with fine details and often have incoporated people into the engraved landscapes.
