Article description
Original antique hand-colored copper engraving, from Joan van Keulen's 'Nieuwe Lichtende Zee-Fakkel', published in Amsterdam, 1684. Depicting Sardinia, this map is a fine example of 1680s European cartography. Image: 514 by 590mm (20 by 23 inches). An attractive and historically significant 17th-century map for the discerning collector. Johannes van Keulen (1654–1715) was a Dutch cartographer and publisher, founder of the renowned Amsterdam firm that specialized in nautical charts. His monumental sea atlas, the 'Zee-Atlas' and 'Nieuwe Lichtende Zee-Fakkel' (The New Shining Sea-Torch), first published in the 1680s, became the standard reference for navigation in European and world waters for over a century. Van Keulen's sea charts are prized for their combination of navigational precision, decorative engraving, and lavish hand coloring. They are held at the Maritiem Museum Rotterdam, the Rijksmuseum, and the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Remarkable the highly decorated handcolored title-cartouches. A fine example from Nieuwe Lichtende Zee-Fakkel, Amsterdam, sought after by collectors of antique maps of Italy, antique maps of Sardinia, and antique hand-colored copper engravings for sale. In very good condition. Light age-toning to the sheet, as expected for a 17th-century map.van Keulen, Joan. – Sardinia · Copper Engraving, Hand Colored · Nieuwe Lichtende Zee-Fakkel, Amsterdam · 1684
